About Parque Natural da Ilha do Pico

Parque Natural da Ilha do Pico encompasses over 21,000 hectares of land and marine areas on Pico Island, part of the Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean. The park is dominated by Mount Pico, Portugal’s tallest mountain, a stratovolcano rising to 2,351 meters (7,713 feet). The terrain features rugged volcanic landscapes, lava fields, traditional vineyards, and rich coastal habitats. The park preserves important ecological zones, including laurel forests, endemic flora, and marine fauna such as whales and dolphins, making it a hotspot for biodiversity. Historically, Pico’s landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity with the last eruption occurring in 1718, and human activity revolves around viticulture, fishing, and increasingly, sustainable tourism. Visitors to the park can explore an extensive network of trails including the ascent to Mount Pico's summit, enjoy bird watching, whale and dolphin spotting tours in surrounding waters, and visit culturally significant sites like the UNESCO-protected Pico Island Vineyard Landscape. The peninsula also features unique geological formations and lava tube caves for exploration. This park offers a blend of physical challenge for hikers, natural beauty, and cultural heritage, appealing to nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
